For years, outdoor furniture has been synonymous with rattan and wrought iron on wide verandahs or lush lawns. Sofa sets and chairs with plump upholstered cushions in nautical stripes or florid florals, invited you to spend hours whiling away time in outdoor comfort. Often made out of cane or bamboo, rattan furniture was prized for its lightweight, elegant natural beauty distinguished by their intricately woven seats and backs.
Wrought iron furniture either painted or powder coated was equally popular especially in the 60’s, teaming up with wood and synthetic leather. This stylish, modern furniture combined practicality with simplicity and reflected the clean, uncluttered lines that dominated the design scene of the time. They seemed perfect for urban living spaces that had shrunk from the traditional sprawling mansions people called home.
However, today’s outdoor furniture has gone beyond mere sofas and chairs and includes a larger range of furniture. Since poolsides are no longer a rarity deckchairs and loungers have become rather popular. People like to stretch themselves out after a swim, grabbing a bit of sunshine as they tan on their poolside loungers. Apart from traditional wood and canvas deck chairs, day beds have caught on too! The elaborately canopied ones with comfortable mattresses and cushions are really the last word in luxury.
Al fresco dining, especially barbecues and pool parties has created a new demand for outdoor dining tables, dining chairs, benches and bar stools. Compact or cumbersome, whatever your style, there are enough outdoor dining options to choose from. And, just so you don’t burn yourself to a crisp, there are huge, garden umbrellas to provide the much needed shade for daytime diners or poolside loungers.
Not to be left out are the swings that provide yet another way to enjoy the outdoors in a gentle, restful way.
